APOSTILLED DOCUMENTS
The process of certifying or legalizing documents for international use in the UK is known as “Apostilling” (taken from the French word for certification). The process of apostilling is carried out by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office under the terms of the 1961 Hague Convention, which abolished the requirement for legalisation by the courts for foreign public documents. The Convention changed the law such that documents “apostilled” under a simple certificate are now acceptable in around 60 countries.
This will often be necessary when UK companies wish to open bank accounts or obtain credit in foreign countries.
Documents to be apostilled include the Certificate of Incorporation, Articles of Association, and a list of current directors. We have to follow a strict process of having documents first certified as authentic by a lawyer, then submitting to the Foreign Office for the Apostille certificate to be issued.
The process consequently takes up to fifteen working days to complete.
